Homework
Homework at a Glance
Reading- Your first grader will be reading each and every night. Your child will be reading take-home books based upon their individual reading level; they will then complete a test based upon the book that they have practiced. Your student will also receive paper books several times per week for reading practice. Books should be practiced at home until your child can read them with ease.
Phonics- Phonic skills are some of the most important skills for your child to master as they are necessary to for your child to be a successful reader. Your child will have a phonics page each night. We will have completed the front side in class. The back side of the page is for homework. There is a small box at the bottom of the homework side which gives directions and information to the parent.
Math- As the year progresses, your first grader will also have a short math assignment each night. It is very helpful for you to work on some of our main math concepts at home (counting, simple addition/subtraction, counting money, telling time). Some of these concepts can be difficult at first and may require additional practice before they are mastered.
Spelling / Vocabulary- Your first grader need to practice for spelling and reading vocabulary tests which will take place at the end of each week. You will receive a new list for each week.
Science / Social Studies- Homework in science and social studies will be random as most of our work will be done in the classroom.
Homework in general- Homework should take 30 minutes to 1 hour at most. Your child will need more time if he/she is struggling on the concepts. If they are succeeding, homework should be fairly easy. Please help ensure your child’s success in first grade by getting them in a routine of nightly homework/practice. I do not give any homework on Fridays.
Extra Credit – Throughout the year, I will give extra credit options for students to complete. These are done at home and with parent supervision. I will post any extra credit options in this section of my blog.
